Sail from your starting point west to explore islands, bays and beaches of the Peloponnese or pick the southeastern route towards Cape Sounion, some 60 km away from Athens.
Western sailing route from Athens:
There are several islands laying in front of Athens, the biggest and closest one being Salamina or Salamis island.
You’ll probably want to escape the crowds so head to nearby Aegina island and smaller Angistri island.
Triangular-shaped Aegina is only 12 nautical miles south of Piraeus. Anchor here to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from caiques moored nearby or savour local dishes in one of the best island restaurants: Remetzo, To Dromaki, Maya Bay and Kavourina.
On the small island of Agistri you will find great beaches and bays which are not very crowded even during the high season. Chalikiada beach and Skliri beachs are great for those looking for wild and secluded spots to dip.
When in search of a mooring place, be aware that due to its shallow water, only smaller boats can moor in Skala, while larger boats can moor in Milos marina.
Next to visit is Poros island, a nice pine-wooded island with calm sea. Be careful around Galata since there are some really shallow water areas to avoid. Inside the strait are many safe coves where you can anchor for a swim or to spend a quiet night away from the lively port.
Next day head to Hydra, a rocky island with a tiny safe port. Beaches are located on the east side and one nearby uninhabited islets of Trikeri and Dokos.
Do not skip the island of Spetses, where you can anchor between the main port Dapia, and the old harbour or head to the ultra safe inner harbour Baltiza.
Spetses hosts a classic boat race in June, while in September you can enjoy the Armata celebration of a historic sea battle with the Ottomans.
For some history, visit Epidavros or Epidaurus. It’s a place mostly known for the ancient theatre, located approximately 30 minutes’ drive away from the port (hire a taxi to get there).
Ancient Epidaurus is a lovely fishing village with some great restaurants and bars where you can taste premium local Greek food. If you come here, check Mouria, To Kalogerikon and To Perivoli tis Gogos for best dining. Bathe in crystal clear water in one of the secluded bays of beaches surrounded by lush pine forests.
Southern sailing route from Athens:
Visit Vouliagmeni and lively Varkiza before heading to Cape Sounion, famous for its Temple of Poseidon.
Vouliagmeni is a great place with many luxury hotels and fine-dining restaurants, with a nice sandy beach. One of the most interesting and beautiful places on the island id the lake!
The Lake of Vouliagmeni is a natural 12-metres deep lake where you can swim!
Varkiza is popular with clubbers and one of the must-visit spots is Island Club Restaurant, called also „Island“. It is super popular with celebrities, royals and jet-setters who visit this vibrant party place on a regular basis.
Here you can dine and have fun too. International dishes, sushi bar, cocktail bar and the tapas bar offer a magnificent view. Do not miss Thursday parties in particular. You have to experience them.
Sail towards Cape Sounioun for some peace and quiet. Here, on top of the rock you’ll see Temple of Poseidon, one of great monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. Underneath it lays the Sounio sandy beach where you can bathe and swim.
